]]>The influence of time and the elements on surface and color is the basis for the photographic series ChromoAlchemy.

While the composition of each of these abstract and impressionistic images originates from some everyday object or other, that original source may no longer be obvious. Indeed, the viewer is encouraged to look beyond the literal and bring his or her own perception to the interpretation, thereby rendering the source object irrelevant.

The title of the series, ChromoAlchemy is derived from the Greek, chromo (khroma: color) and alchemy (chumeia: mixture). Each piece takes its name from elements, objects and deities of the ancient Greek language and culture. I am the chromo-alchemist, mixing a bit of organic decay with some beautiful light, or a lovely natural line with a touch of oxidized color. Completely in-camera, I conjure the extraordinary from the ordinary and the magic from the mundane.

Images are not digitally altered except to lightly color-correct, expose or sharpen, and then only with the intent of restoring the original vision. By carefully mixing the elements of contrast, texture, dimension and motion, each composition in the ChromoAlchemy series is magically revealed.

Adding textures such as brush strokes, scratches or incisions, pigments, and/or mixed media and found objects offers an unlimited source of inspiration. Images can be embedded in or transferred to the encaustic surface, and the result is a personal and soulful artistic expression.

]]>I first began working on Street Lights in 2007 during an obligatory family visit to Las Vegas. As a person who neither gambles or enjoys the other traditional kinds of entertainment this city provides, I was left to find my own diversion. Overstimulated by the noise, crowds and lights, I initially had difficulty creating strong compositions until I began to purposefully break the rules of traditional photography. This alternate approach allowed me to create visual order from the chaos around me.


The inspiration for beautiful image-making can be found virtually anywhere, and I have made it a personal challenge to find and make compelling imagery in the least likely settings. Street Lights, like much of my earlier work, utilizes multiple visual dimensions to weave a fabric of light and color. The visual motion creates a kind of poetry that stands on its own, unrelated to the photographic source. Lines become melody and texture is harmony. Color speaks like different voices in the night.
